I knew someone years ago, his first language was not English, who pronounced cowboy with the accent on the second syllable, like so: kuh-BOY, as in kuh-BOY-boots. I always hear his pronunciation when I see cowboy in print. Hope I haven’t ruined the word for you.
Smith’s Life on Mars has some great stuff in it. I also like part 2 of “My God, It’s Full of Stars,” which features Charlton Heston, who certainly played his share of cowboys:
